Matter launched in late 2022 with a lot of noise. The promise: one standard that lets any smart home device work with any ecosystem, no matter who made it. No more buying a “Works with Alexa” plug that refuses to talk to your Google Home. No more proprietary hubs for every brand.
Reality has been slower. Two years in, Matter is real, but it’s not the seamless utopia the marketing suggested. Many devices claim Matter support, but the actual experience varies wildly depending on your controller, your network, and the device’s firmware version.
This article cuts through the hype and tells you which categories of devices actually work with Matter today, what the tradeoffs are, and what you should avoid.
Matter is a connectivity standard that allows smart home devices to communicate locally over your home network, without needing a cloud service. It uses either Wi-Fi, Thread (a low-power mesh protocol), or Ethernet. The key benefit: a Matter light bulb from Brand X can be controlled by Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or Samsung SmartThings, all at the same time, with no extra hubs (beyond a compatible controller).
But there are important caveats:
You need a Matter controller. This is a hub or smart speaker that acts as the bridge between your phone and the devices. For Apple, that’s a HomePod or Apple TV. For Google, a Nest Hub (2nd gen or newer) or Nest Wifi Pro. For Amazon, an Echo (4th gen or newer) or Echo Plus. Without one, Matter devices are just expensive paperweights.
Not all devices support all features. A Matter lock might only support basic lock/unlock, not passcodes or schedules. A Matter light might not support color temperature changes. The standard is still being expanded.
Thread vs. Wi-Fi matters. Thread devices are lower power and form a mesh, but they require a Thread border router (often built into the same controllers). Wi-Fi devices are simpler but use more power and can congest your network.
Firmware updates are still messy. Many devices shipped with Matter support promised “coming soon.” Some delivered, some didn’t. Always check the current firmware version before buying.
As of early 2025, Matter supports these device types officially: lights and switches, plugs and outlets, locks, thermostats, sensors (contact, motion, temperature), blinds, and media devices (TVs, speakers). In practice, the most mature categories are lights, plugs, and switches. Locks and sensors are functional but limited. Thermostats exist but are rare. Cameras, complex sensors (like leak or smoke), and robot vacuums are not yet supported.
The biggest missing piece: multi-admin (controlling a device from multiple ecosystems simultaneously) works, but it’s often buggy. You can add a Matter bulb to Apple Home and then share it with Google Home, but the setup process is finicky, and some features (like scenes or automations) don’t transfer.
This is the safest bet. Brands like Eve, Philips Hue (with the Hue Bridge), TP-Link Kasa, and Meross offer Matter-compatible plugs and switches. They are simple: on/off, power monitoring (sometimes), and they work reliably across ecosystems. Expect to pay $15–$30 per plug, slightly more than a non-Matter equivalent. The tradeoff: you lose the ability to use the manufacturer’s advanced app features (like schedules or energy reports) if you only use Matter. But for basic control, they’re solid.
Philips Hue, Nanoleaf, and Govey have Matter-compatible bulbs. Hue requires the Hue Bridge (which acts as a Matter bridge), but then any Matter controller can control the lights. Nanoleaf’s Essential bulbs use Thread directly, no hub needed. Prices: $15–$50 per bulb. The catch: color and white temperature control works, but animations or scenes from the native app may not be available via Matter. Also, Thread reliability depends on your network density — if you only have one Thread border router, range can be spotty.
Level, Yale, and Aqara offer Matter-compatible locks. They support basic lock/unlock and status. But advanced features like auto-unlock, passcodes, or guest access are often only available through the manufacturer’s app, not through Matter. That means you still need the brand’s app for full functionality, which defeats part of the purpose. Prices: $150–$300. If you just want to lock/unlock from any ecosystem, they work. If you want a fully integrated smart lock, wait.
Eve and Aqara lead here. Eve’s Thread-based contact and motion sensors work well with Apple Home and Google Home via Matter. Aqara’s sensors require the Aqara Hub (which acts as a Matter bridge), but then they can be shared. Prices: $20–$40. The limitation: Matter sensor triggers can be used in automations, but the automation creation itself often requires the native ecosystem app (e.g., Apple Home). That’s fine if you’re already in one ecosystem, but cross-ecosystem automations are still clunky.
This is the biggest hidden trap. Matter is supposed to free you from ecosystem lock-in, but in practice, you still need to pick a primary controller. And that controller determines your experience.
Apple Home is the most polished Matter implementation. Setup is smooth, automations work well, and Thread support is strong. But you need a HomePod or Apple TV, and you’re locked into Apple’s ecosystem for advanced features like scenes and home automation.
Google Home is improving but still behind. Matter setup can be buggy, and the app is bloated. Google’s Thread border router (in Nest Hub 2nd gen or Nest Wifi Pro) works, but device discovery sometimes fails.
Amazon Alexa has decent Matter support, but the app is cluttered with ads and suggestions. Alexa’s strength is voice control, but for automations, it’s less capable than Apple.
Samsung SmartThings is a solid middle ground. The SmartThings Hub v3 and newer models support Matter and Thread. The app is straightforward, and cross-ecosystem sharing works reasonably well.
The tradeoff: if you buy a Matter device, you can switch ecosystems later, but you’ll have to re-pair everything. And some devices may lose features when moved.
Devices that claim “Matter-ready” but require a future firmware update. Many early products promised Matter support that never came. Only buy devices that already have Matter enabled out of the box or via a confirmed update.
Devices that require a proprietary hub even with Matter. Some brands (like Philips Hue or Aqara) use their hub as a Matter bridge. That’s fine, but it means you still need that hub. If you want a hub-free setup, choose Thread-native devices.
Cheap no-name brands. Matter certification is expensive, so budget brands often skip it or use a half-baked implementation. Stick with established names: Eve, Philips Hue, Nanoleaf, Aqara, Level, Yale, TP-Link, Meross.
Devices that only support one ecosystem. Some “Matter” devices are actually just Matter-over-Wi-Fi but only tested with one controller. Read reviews carefully.
Matter devices typically cost 10–30% more than their non-Matter equivalents. A standard Wi-Fi smart plug might be $10; a Matter version is $15–$20. A Thread-based Matter bulb might be $25 vs. $15 for a Bluetooth bulb.
You pay for the promise of interoperability. But reliability is still hit-or-miss. Thread devices can drop off the mesh if your network is weak. Wi-Fi devices can cause congestion. And firmware updates can break compatibility.
My advice: start small. Buy one or two Matter plugs or bulbs from a reputable brand. Test them with your primary ecosystem. If they work well, expand. Don’t rip out your existing smart home and replace it all with Matter today.
If you’re building a new smart home from scratch, Matter is worth adopting for lights, plugs, and basic sensors — stick with Thread-native devices from Eve or Nanoleaf, and use an Apple Home or SmartThings controller for the most reliable experience. If you already have a working setup, there’s no urgent need to switch. Matter will get better, but it’s not a revolution yet.
